Fraidpacking dei Lupi cuts through the wild heart of Abruzzo over three days and 176 kilometers, climbing more than 3,300 meters across the rugged gravel terrain of the Maiella massif. This is mountain bikepacking with teeth — remote, demanding, and shaped by a landscape where wolves still roam and the silence between villages is absolute. The name says it all: this is riding done with a healthy dose of fear and a lot of respect for the territory. Exposed ridgelines, steep technical climbs, and the raw beauty of one of Italy's most untamed national parks make every kilometer feel earned and every descent a small act of courage. The ride begins in the amber morning light of Sulmona, where the air carries pine resin and something wilder from the hills above. From the first pedal strokes the route climbs hard into the Apennine interior, the road narrowing and the gradient sharpening until the lungs begin to negotiate with the legs. The landscape opens into broad, tilted meadows and dense forest corridors, the silence broken only by wind and effort. After 52 kilometres and more than 1,300 metres of climbing, Scanno appears — tucked and ancient, earned.

The morning air leaving Scanno carries the cold mineral scent of the lake still hidden below the treeline, and the legs wake slowly into the first climbs. The route threads through a quieter, less dramatic Abruzzo — broader valleys, agricultural land folding into forested flanks, the effort measured and rhythmic rather than savage. Sixty-one kilometres accumulate without spectacle but with a slow, satisfying weight, the kind of day that earns its end. Gioia dei Marsi arrives gently, almost without announcement.

The final day opens in the cool shadow of the Marsica mountains, dew still clinging to the grass as the route rolls south through wide Apennine valleys that smell of wet earth and pine. The terrain is kinder here than in previous days but never entirely relents, pushing riders through steady climbs that demand patience and reward them with long, sweeping descents into cultivated lowlands. The landscape gradually softens — rough highland pasture giving way to ochre hillsides and terraced slopes — as Sulmona's valley draws closer. After seventy kilometres and nearly a thousand metres of climbing, the ancient town appears below like a destination earned.
